You need to use drugs in order to function. You’ve become dependent on your drug(s) of choice. If you are taking mind-altering substances like heroin, cocaine, or marijuana, the chemistry in your brain changes. The more you use, the more you need to get the high. It’s incredibly difficult to stop. If you are addicted, it’s also common that one drug may lead to another.
The sequence of using drugs and achieving the subsequent high creates a reinforcing pattern in your brain to repeat the rewarding behavior of continued substance use. The brain adapts to overwhelming surges in dopamine by producing less dopamine or by reducing the number of dopamine receptors in the reward circuit. This causes you to continue using larger amounts of the drug to achieve the same dopamine effect, essentially building tolerance.
We know the right questions to ask in order to assess what’s contributing to your drug use and can help you turn things around.
You may or may not be aware that your using habits are creating problems at home, at work and in life, but the addiction takes over and it is hard to just stop.
